In a perfect world I want a TT with he 3.2 but I would be willing to take a TT with the 1.8 turbo. 225hp with awd and a 6 speed would be a lot of fun on the back roads I would guess. And they are cheap!

I’ve heard the AWD turbo is the better driving car.

The TT225 has the K04 turbo and twin intercoolers. 270bhp is roughly the max you can squeeze out with that turbo, but it’s easy to attain with basic upgrades.

Weirdly I’ve never liked the MK1 S3 but always liked the MK1 TT despite being the same car underneath but with a lot less practicality. I can’t even says it’s the looks because well the TT ain’t a looker. Probably all those R8 bodykits messing with my head.

I’ll say this for them - despite looking a little like a New Beetle that’s been abusing steroids, they’re the modern Audi highest on my list of actual interest.

Why though, it is an inherently unbalanced chassis. Couple that with a 3.2 liter giant ass V6 on the nose of the car. I’m gonna bet my life on that understeering like a pig. How is that fun? I mean, a FWD can be fun, if you keep it from exposing its natural inadequacies (small lightweight engine to minimize weight on overhang), but this TT has no weight over the back, and all the weight on the front overhang. It’s just all wrong.

We have an A3 3.2 Quattro (which is basically the same at a TT 3.2 Quattro except it weighs a bit more, and it only came with the DSG) and I would highly recommend it. Other than the rear diff going out a week after we bought it, which as replaced for free due to the kind people at Audi of Cary, it has been a really reliable and great car. It’s fast, economical, and the Engine Bits are surprisingly easy to work on and it is inexpensive to repair and maintain. And in some cases, a 3.2 A3 can be had for less than a 3.2 TT.

The 1.8 is much easier to modify than the 3.2, because the only thing you can do with the 3.2 is have a Unitronic tune on it or slap a turbo. The latter is about $7,000. If you’re looking at an inexpensive vehicle to modify, get the 1.8. If you’re looking for a properly quick, torquey, and just overall fun vehicle with a fantastic linear power band, get the 3.2

The 3.2 is AWD. And it handles surprisingly well for all that weight on the front.

I don’t know if we have the same definition of handling. I know for a fact, the Audi TT had terrible front overhang weight and understeer. Take that to an autocross, mountain road, or track and it will get eaten up.

I do apologize, I got confused and mixed up the A3 and the TT. The A3 has much less of a front overhang and overall sucks less.

Owned a 2001 225 hp model. It was great for those few months when it wasn't in the shop. It had a taste for clutch slave cylinders.

I love them, but would pick the 3.2 over the 1.8.

That 1.8T has been called one of, if not, the worst engine ever done by VAG.

in the longitudinal mounting (passat) it really was bad. for some reason, the transverse mounted ones held up better

That’s why the FiST is known as the better driver’s car. The FoST also pushes the envelope of FWD performance too. Any more power, and it wont help much at all. In fact, it will probably be better to have less power for better balance, which explains why it’s sibling is so adored.

At least with the FoST, it’s using a small bore aluminum 2.0 turbo. It just has less weight. Also it is sitting in transverse, more towards the front of the axle rather than a longitudinal configuration that has the transmission sitting in middle of front axle and the engine way out front. In this case, the TT has a 3.2L V6 that doesn’t even start until a decent 1 foot ahead of the front axle.

With an inherently unbalanced chassis, you have a tradeoff of power for balance, the more power you get, the more unbalanced you get. In something more suited for performance from the get go, a midengine car, you can add power, which leads to adding mechanical weight on the middle of the car, which keeps the same balance as before.

Well it seems like the solution then is to get the Audi TT 1.8T you still get a good torquey little engine and horsepower.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah if you HAVE to get a TT instead of like a similarly priced car then the 1.8T is going to understeer less. But if you are really looking for a fun car to hit the mountain curves, theres just better options out in the 5k price range. you want neutral balanced weight distribution with a high caster front suspension.

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > Bytemite
04/13/2016 at 16:39

Kinja'd!!!0

But let's say you want AWD as well. What other options are there at the 5k range?

Kinja'd!!! Bytemite > JR1
04/13/2016 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!0

Can I ask why you want AWD? I thought you were looking for a fun cornering machine. Even if you stay with AWD, there are still better options. Let me see...bugeye WRX comes to mind first ~4-5k. A clean 1st gen DSM will run you ~4k. Hell, even things like a Galant VR4 will give you way more thrills than a TT and they can be had for like ~2-3k. Oh and almost forgot, the Celica Alltrac.

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > Bytemite

This is mostly hypothetical but I have to contend with hills, ice, and roads that do not get plowed and AWD with snow tires would be better than FWD with snow tires any day of the week.

Kinja'd!!!0

Don’t you live in Florida? O.o

Idk man it is your decision but being in Florida and basing your car buying decision on hypothetical situations that you are fortunate not to have, sounds crazy. Life’s too short to be driving boring cars. So don’t go buying a big heavy AWD, safety-laden minivan-truck because SOMEday you’ll crash, SOMEday you’ll encounter an icy unplowed hill, SOMEday you’ll need to give 6 friends a ride, or someday you need to move all your stuff in one trip. Buy a car for the 99.9% of the time, the time you spend grinning when you get behind the wheel, the time you feel the exhilaration of carving a corner just right at the limit.

Nope I live in Ohio.

The Florida listings above are there because we gone on vacation down there and my grandparents have a home and sometimes we buy our cars down there because Florida cars have less rust. If I lived in Florida I would buy RWD cars all day long.

Hmm well my response will still be the same. You have 9 months of no chance of snow. Get snow tires for the other 3. Oppo all the way.
